BOSTON – Team Excel, representing The Skating Club of Boston, is pleased to announce the expansion of its synchronized skating program. In addition to the nationally competitive Team Excel Collegiate, and developmental teams in three locations – Boston, Marlborough, and Foxboro – Team Excel will be fielding Senior and Intermediate teams for the 2012-2013 season.
To support this expansion, Team Excel welcomes Anu Oksanen, world champion coach and choreographer of both Marigold Ice Unity (Senior) and Musketeers (Junior) from Helsinki, Finland, as collaborator on Team Excel’s IJS teams. Merita Mullen, the Director of Synchronized Skating for Team Excel, is excited about the collaboration. “Anu and I have worked together on and off since 2002. I am thrilled to have her creative genius and involvement as we expand the Collegiate and Senior Programs. Anu is a one of a kind coach, and a very dear friend.”
“It is a very exciting time for us!” added David Wolfe, President of Team Excel. “We have experienced overwhelming interest in our programs during this past year and fielded many requests from skaters throughout New England. This is the perfect time for expansion as The Skating Club of Boston celebrates its 100th anniversary and its commitment to excellence in all of the U.S. Figure Skating disciplines.”
Team Excel offers programs that give skaters the opportunity to participate in this rapidly growing sport while pursuing their educational goals. Having a strong understanding of the demands on many families during these tough economic times, Team Excel is proud to be able to fully fund their Collegiate team through a scholarship program. “I am so grateful to be able to continue skating while continuing my education,” stated Lee Anne Filosa, Collegiate Line Manager, “Excel has really given me the best of both worlds.”
This generous philosophy and commitment to its skaters will also carry over to Team Excel’s Senior Team. All eligible skaters will receive full synchronized skating scholarships for the 2012-13 season.
In addition, the Team Excel and Mini Crystals organizations have merged to create a comprehensive developmental program at the Beginner through Open Juvenile levels. As Merita explains, “We are pleased to welcome Mandy Curtin as our new Director of Skater Development for Team Excel/Excel Crystals. Mandy’s leadership, based on international skating experience, strong motivational skills, and proven coaching expertise, demonstrates our commitment to develop the finest skaters for our synchro teams.”
“Team Excel’s mission is to build strong, high quality, competitive teams that promote good sportsmanship while encouraging our skaters’ growth and confidence through a team experience. We are confident that Merita’s partnerships with Anu and Mandy, along with her extensive experience and recognition as a worldwide leader in the sport of synchronized skating, will further drive Team Excel’s development of competitive synchronized skating teams at all levels,” said Wolfe.
